Explicit signage with alternative meaning.
Inspired by Japan’s bold (and perhaps sometimes confusing) road signage, this piece reinterprets the familiar symbols we’ve encountered throughout our travels, transcoding them into high-visibility markers of an interpretive and perhaps hypnotic meaning.
By flipping the intent of these visual cues and embodying them with abstract shapes, patterns, and sizes, Mixed Signals challenges viewers to question their assumptions — what do these signs really mean?
Mixed Signals was designed for Nissan Japan’s X‑Trail launch in Yokohama in 2025 as part of the curation for their “Drive Through Museum,” accessible by car or foot.
