A radiant retreat beneath the surface of Shimokitazawa Station

Created for the annual evening festival that illuminates Tokyo’s trendy upbeat neighborhood of Shimokitazawa, Moon Art Night, Shapes in the Night” brings life to the brutalist concrete space of the underground Odakyu Railway with vibrant, flickering explosive forms.

These works create a luminous utopia in an otherwise deserted space, transforming it into a canvas of vibrant energy. The neon LEDs invite a shift in perspective, away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo’s cityscape, paying tribute to the city’s never-ending nightlife. A silent yet captivating silver comet rests in the center of the room as the illuminated walls cartoonishly evoke the momentous impact.

Through its play of light and shadow, Shapes in the Night” invites the reconsideration of utilitarian space. It draws attention to overlooked environments and reclaims them as sites of beauty, potential, and imagination — particularly within one of Tokyo’s popular railway lines.

This work has been acquired by the Terrada Art Complex based in Japan.
